Required Readings: Is 3D Printing Art?

Course Project: Expressive Self-Portrait

Assignment: Self3D

Medium: 3D modeling/3D printing (Fused Deposition Modeling with PLA Thermoplastics)

Description: In this course-long project you will be introduced to FDM 3D printing and its use as a creative tool by artists. Through the use of digital 3D modeling software (Autodesk’s Tinkercad & Meshmixer) you will create an introspective and expressive self-portrait that either communicates something about yourself or sheds some light into your personality. During the first class meeting, your face and hands will be scanned. These scans will form the base of your self-portrait. To the base, you will add personally relevant symbols and objects by incorporating original digital designs, appropriated models from other creators (always giving credit, of course), and/or found objects.

Assessment: You will discuss, produce, and present a personal and novel artistic self-portrait that represents your identity. At the highest level of achievement your work process should demonstrate a willingness to explore a variety of ideas; demonstrate that you see and can communicate connections between objects, images, and your own life; and demonstrate that you can use symbols effectively. You should consider different ways of representing yourself; appraise and justify your artistic choices; and show awareness that there can be different perspectives on how and why self-portraits are created and what they say about their subjects.
