TRIO Student Support Services

Accessing Microsoft Teams

Every new TRIO student is added to our virtual Teams group chat. This is an awesome space to connect with the KV TRIO community and build your peer network!

Download or access Teams here

  • Desktop app: Click the Download Teams button under the "Teams for work or school" heading
  • Mobile app (phone/tablet): Scroll down until you see the "Get the Teams mobile app" QR code. Scan the code with your phone/tablet camera and click the link that pops up. (You can also search for "Teams" or "Microsoft Teams" in your device's app store.)

Access to Teams is free for KVCC students. In order to access the TRIO chat, log in with your KVCC email address and password.


What can I do with Teams?

We strongly recommend ALL TRIO students download Teams on at least 1 device, because this is our main online platform for program services. This includes...

  • Remote advising and tutoring sessions with TRIO staff
  • Sharing updates about program events or answering questions
  • Connecting with other TRIO students via group or private chats (we recommend downloading the Teams app on your phone to receive chat notifications)
  • SOC 209: Leadership Development course uses Teams heavily

How does it work?

Shortly after being admitted to the TRIO program, students are added to both the TRIO Teams page and TRIO S.P.A.C.E. group chat.

The Teams page (under the "Teams" tab) is rarely used; however, it connects to our email list, so we still add all TRIO students there. This ensures you receive emails from us, too.

The group chat is where most of the action is. You can post here to talk to any other TRIO students. Many students use this space to ask questions, find study buddies or rideshares, or just... chat. Feel free to introduce yourself! (Hint: if you're replying to someone, it helps to tag them by using @ and typing their name.)

You can also create a private chat with other students or staff.


Tutoring & advising sessions

If you booked a remote/virtual tutoring or advising session with us, we will typically meet with you on Teams using the video chat feature.

  • We HIGHLY recommend downloading the desktop app and using Teams on your computer for virtual meetings. This allows you to access all Teams functions.
  • If you've scheduled a meeting through Bookings: the meeting link will be in your confirmation email.
  • If you were sent a direct invite: click on the Calendar tab in Teams, select the meeting, and click "Join." (Hint: if you're running late, you can click "Chat with participants" to let the other person know.) You can also check your email for the invite and join from there.

How do I stop receiving notifications?

  • Desktop: go to the Chat tab and hover your mouse over the chat name. Then, click the three dots and select "Mute."
  • Mobile phone/tablet: go to the Chat tab and slide the chat name to the left. Then, click the three dots/"More" button and select "Mute".
  • Silence all Teams notifications: go to your device settings to turn off notifications for the Teams app.

Accessing TRIO's Brightspace page

In addition to Teams, all TRIO students can also access our Brightspace page.

This platform is less interactive, but it's a great place to find resources we've curated for TRIO students – from past workshop presentations and academic self-study resources to financial assistance and career skills/transfer info.

  • You will be added to the TRIO Brightspace "course" automatically. It may take up to 2 weeks, because we send IT a list of students to add periodically.
  • Unlike other KVCC courses, TRIO is not assigned to a specific term (e.g., Fall 2023-2024 semester). If you don't see it on your Brightspace homepage with your other courses, make sure the term is set to "All".

 


How to use bookings

Bookings is the simplest way to schedule a meeting with TRIO. It automatically syncs with KV TRIO staff calendars, so you can easily pick a time that works for both of us – no need to email back and forth!

Intake meeting

  • If you booked an appointment with Michelle when you submitted your application: You're all set! No need to schedule another meeting.
  • If you haven't booked an appointment yet: You can use the Bookings link above. Please select the Meet with Michelle service, choose a date/time, and fill in your contact info. Then click "Book"!

If you're booking an advising meeting:

  • Select the Advising service.
  • Select the name of your advisor from the "Staff" drop-down menu.
  • Choose a date/time and fill in your contact info.
  • Click "Book"!

If you're booking a tutoring session:

  • Each tutor has a separate service listed. Just select the subject you'd like help with. (If the subject you're looking for isn't listed, please contact your TRIO advisor.)
  • Choose a date/time and fill in your contact info.
  • Some tutors include additional questions for you to answer before you can book.
  • Click "Book"!

Note: You cannot schedule a meeting less than 24 hours before the meeting time. If you need to meet sooner, or if the available times don't work for you, please contact the tutor/advisor directly.


Confirmation email

After booking an appointment, you should receive a confirmation email. It will go to the email address you used for the booking.

This email will contain a link to a Microsoft Teams meeting. If you scheduled a virtual session, use this link to access the meeting. Otherwise, you can ignore it.

Usually, there is also a link to cancel or reschedule the meeting, if necessary. If you need to cancel/reschedule but can't find the link, please email the staff member as soon as possible.
