3D Printing Guidelines

Purpose

These guidelines establish how and under what circumstances Kennebec Valley Community College students, faculty, and staff may use the College’s 3D printers.

Guidelines

3D printers are available to current Kennebec Valley Community College students, faculty, and staff.

3D printers may be used only for lawful purposes. No one will be permitted to use a 3D printer to create material that:

  • Is not in compliance with the System's Computer & Network Use Policy or the College’s Computer & Internet Acceptable Use Policy;
  • Violates the Student Code of Conduct or the Weapons Policy;
  • Is obscene or otherwise inappropriate for the College environment;
  • Is in violation of another’s intellectual property rights including copyright, patent, and/or trademark protections with respect to fair use and other legal exceptions.

Kennebec Valley Community College students, faculty, and staff are able to use the 3D printers on a self-service basis after successfully completing a required 3D printing training session and submitting a completed 3D Printing Terms of Use Agreement.

For the benefit of all makers, 3D printer use must be scheduled at least 12 hours in advance using the 3D Printer Reservations calendar. Only trained users may access the calendar.

3D printers may only be used while College staff or student workers are present.

Users must comply with all 3D Printing Workspace Rules.

A user’s access to the 3D Printing Workspace may be revoked if the user is found to be in violation with any points in the 3D Printing Guidelines or the 3D Printing Workspace Rules.

Bibliography

Making It Real: 3D Printing as a Library Service

  • Findings from a University of Nevada, Reno, project indicate that higher education's need for 3D printing services could be both substantial and broad-based across disciplines.
  • Users from across disciplinary and organizational boundaries quickly adopted a 3D printing service implemented in a UNR academic library, with the new printers operating at or near capacity throughout the service's first year.
  • Anecdotal observation suggests that 3D printer access directly enables deeper engagement with and construction of knowledge.

3D Scanners

3D scanners are available on loan to students, faculty, and staff. Please contact the Library for more information.
