Academic Tools and Resources

The material on this page focuses on tools and resources that are useful across many if not all the courses you will encounter in the Department of Social Science and Psychology.  These serve as a reference for instructors to guide your performance and to meet the expectations of the courses designed and delivered in the program.

File Types and Naming Conventions

Submitting Digital Files

All the courses in the Department of Social Sciences and Psychology utilize online drop boxes for the submission of assignments.  Because these files are digital and must be downloaded and read on different devices, the Department has established standards for the submission of assignments.

File Types

File type refers to both the default file that an application saves documents in and to alternative file types that many of these can be converted to in order to optimize sharing across devices.

The following are accepted file types.  Utilize these file types unless the instructions or instructor has indicated otherwise.

  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Microsoft PowerPoint

All other file types must be converted to PDF prior to submission.  Do not submit the following file types directly:

  • Pages
  • Numbers
  • Keynote
  • Google Docs/Sheets/Slides

Naming Conventions

When you save a document, you give it a name.  It is important to organize your own files using a naming convention so you can locate your own files quickly.  It is also important to do so for your instructor.  Files names should include the following:

  • Last Name
  • First Initial
  • Course Code and Number
  • Chapter Number
  • Assignment Descriptor (Assignment, Presentation, Project, etc.)

A Microsoft Word file submitted by me for the Chapter 1 Assignment in Introduction to Psychology would look like this (please include the hyphens for clarity:

All students at KVCC are provided with free access to Microsoft Office!  We have a deal with them that allow currently registered students to download all the Office apps to their computer and to any mobile device (there are versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint that will work on our tablet and/or phone.)

This tool will also give you access to other Microsoft apps such as Teams (KVCC uses this to hold virtual meetings), OneDrive (online file storage), OneNote (organize information), and Outlook (email client).

To access these tools you need to visit the link below and use your KVCC user name and password to register.
